Less than a month after winning an international award – a Fort McMurray author continues to collect accolades.

Author Therese Greenwood’s ‘What You Take With You: Wildfire, Family and the Road Home,’ was released Monday and is already making its mark as the top seller on amazon.ca’s natural disaster category.

The book details her time during the evacuation as well as what helped her cope with the situation.

Greenwood tells Mix News it’s an intimate personal tale about the few belongings she took with her upon evacuation.

“Which is a story that’s very familiar to everyone in Fort McMurray,” she said. “When the call came to evacuate, we all just grabbed what we could and in the weeks that followed, we were wondering – why were these the things I decided to take with me?”

She adds every single one of those belongings held sentimental value.

“What I realized was my subconscious was working overtime while I was making those decisions. So, while it didn’t seem there was logic at the time, I found out later that the things I took were the things I needed to heal from the experience.”

Earlier this month, Greenwood won the Western Writers of America award for her crossover short story ‘Buck’s Last Ride.’

She feels the success of ‘What You Take With You,’ is a testament to how interested people are in the wildfire story.

“Not just here in Northern Alberta but across the country. And we’re seeing that too because of course there are other Fort McMurray books that are on the list that are doing well. So, there seems to be a very strong appetite for information about the Fort McMurray story.”

Greenwood is hosting a workshop for people wanting to write about their own personal wildfire experience.

The event takes place Saturday at the Wood Buffalo Regional Library at 9:30 a.m.
