There are tons of festivities in the RMWB over the holiday long weekend in celebration of Canada Day.
Two days of festivities kicks off at MacDonald Island Park on Sunday for a day of baseball and music. The Fort McMurray Giants host the Brooks Bombers for a doubleheader at the Shell Place Baseball Stadium, there will also be free music entertainment all evening long at the SMS Equipment Stadium.
The day will cap off with Canada Day Fireworks at 11:59 p.m.
On July 1, the Wood Buffalo Multicultural Association, in partnership with McMurray Metis and Fort McMurray Heritage Society is holding its big bannock and pancake breakfast at Heritage Village from 8-10 a.m.
Then you can stroll downtown – where the Canada Day Parade will kick off at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Riedel Street starting at 10:30 a.m.
From 10:30-12:00 p.m., the parade will run north along Franklin from Riedel Street to Morrison Street.
As a result, multiple road closures will be in effect.
Clearwater Drive from Riedel to Main Street will be closed from 7:00-1:00 p.m. for float staging. Riedel Street will be closed from 10:15-11:30 a.m. from Clearwater Drive to Franklin Avenue. Franklin will be shut down from 10:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. from Riedel Street to Morrison Street. Morrison will be closed from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. from Franklin Avenue to Fraser Avenue.
Meanwhile, you can visit Heritage Village and Shipyard where you can learn about the history of our region, admission will be free all day long.
RMWB staff is also be on site at the Shipyard from 1-4 p.m. for another downtown engagement session.
For the kids, there will be bouncy castles, face painting, crafts and public swimming at the Syncrude Aquatic Centre. Family entertainment will be provided on the Family Main Stage from 1-3 p.m.
The Fort McMurray Giants are also at home taking on the Brooks Bombers with first pitch shortly after 6:00 p.m.
What’s Open/Closed
Peter Pond Mall will be open all weekend. On Monday, you can head to the mall from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Keyano College Sports & Wellness Centre is open on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. on Monday, they’re opened from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m.
The Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MacDonald Island Park will be operating on holiday hours on Monday. It will be open from 7:00 a.m. – 10: 00 p.m. All other holiday hours for the Park can be found here.
The movie theatre will be open all weekend.
As for municipal services, there will be no changes to curbside collection or landfill and scale operating hours. All collection will proceed as normal.
The soil stockpile will be closed on July 1 for the Canada Day holiday, and will re-open on Wednesday, July 3. The stockpile site is located at the rear southwest corner of Abraham’s Land and can be accessed on the west side of Thickwood Blvd. across from Dickins Dr.
Transit
Transit services will run a reduced service on Monday. Only routes 11 (Airport), 15 (Timberlea Express), 16 (Thickwood Express), and 99 (MacDonald Island) will be running.
These four routes will be operating on their regular service over the weekend,
