The struggle is over for the Fort McMurray Monarchs.
On Saturday, the Monarchs snapped a 3-game losing skid by topping the league’s best squad in the Cold Lake Fighter Jets – by a score of 14-11 in their final home game of the regular season.
That improves them to 2-and-4 on the campaign.
Head Coach Kevin Garbuio tells Mix News their defence was phenomenal.
“We were great at stopping the run, we really struggled against them last time in that regard. And going with the 3-3 formation caused a lot of problems for them in terms of blocking and not being able to see what we were doing. So, doing something different was very important to us this week.”
The win not only ends Cold Lake’s unbeaten season, but it also avenges a 49-0 drubbing at the hands of the Fighter Jets, earlier this season.
Garbuio notes it was a huge victory with a lot of their star players coming through in the clutch.
He says the win was a culmination of all they’ve worked for.
“Finally, we close one out and we’re happy with that. That’s something we’re seeing, we’re seeing the stars lead, we’re seeing the depth, we’re seeing the core come together. We’d like to have a few more bodies but we’ll take what we can get and we’re going to keep rolling.”
The Monarchs head south this week – as they get set to take on the Calgary Wolfpack.
