The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have snapped a five-game losing skid.
The Barons took part in the AJHL showcase this weekend – falling to Brooks in a shootout by a score of 3-2 on Friday, before rebounding with a 5-4 shootout win of their own against Camrose on Saturday.
Head Coach Bob Beatty tells Mix News while Saturday’s game was a big victory – there’s still lots of room for improvement.
“Wins are what they are and it’s great to get one after five losses but it’s part of the process. We need to come out, we still have 51 games and we need to continue improving.”
Despite that, Beatty feels the victory was a great momentum builder for his squad.
While the win does give the team some life – the coach says cleaning up their play must be a top priority.
“The process continues. Even though we lost last Tuesday against Bonnyville, we felt we’d made some progress and played a lot better. The score will look after itself if we take care of the details.”
The Barons added some size and physicality on Monday, by acquiring 6’6″, 220-pound forward Kyle Pow from the BCHL’s Powell River Kings for future considerations.
The 19-year-old appeared in 17 BCHL games last season and recorded one assist and 48 penalty minutes.
He also brings some WHL experience to the Oil Barons’ line up, having appeared in 38 games with the Kelowna Rockets over the past two seasons.
In 38 WHL games, Pow registered three assists and 51 penalty minutes.
The MOB get a few days off before hitting the ice on Friday – when they take on Spruce Grove at the Casman Centre.
