The new RMWB transit terminals could be up and running by the end of fall.
That’s according to the municipality – who are still working on construction for the new heated bus shelters, designed to enhance connectivity and convenience.
The stations – which are located on Thickwood Blvd, in front of the Casman Centre and along Confederation Way in Timberlea – are fully funded through federal and provincial grants.
RMWB spokesperson Adam Hardiman tells Mix News there have been several delays up until this point.
“I think we all know the amount of rain we had delayed construction on many projects. So, sometimes you can’t foresee that, but construction is ongoing. Obviously, it’s something that’s got to be done right so, we’re looking at a completion date of Fall 2019 – likely toward the back end of the fall.”
The new terminals will enhance routing, transfers, and connections on the north side of the Athabasca Bridge.
Hardiman says they are imperative to the community’s continued growth.
“They’re built in a way that’s really going to minimize impact to other traffic, so, that’s a key consideration. The way it’s designed, we’ll basically be able to have seven transit buses as well as the heated shelters. Really, it’s just about making sure it’s safe and making sure we connect to those pedestrian networks as well.”
They will also make it a lot easier for transit users to get downtown.
Hardiman feels with a decent weather forecast ahead, construction should be able to make up for the lost time.
“We just want to make sure we continue on safely. As you know, it’s in a high traffic area so, safety is an utmost concern with this project, but we’ll make sure when it gets done, we’ll bring it online for our transit users as soon as possible.”
