The Athabasca Landing Métis are backing Teck Resources’ Frontier project.
They’re throwing their support at the proposed oilsands which would be located north of Fort McMurray next to Wood Buffalo National Park.
Athabasca Landing Metis Community President Ron Donald tells Mix News Teck has done a great job alleviating concerns brought to them.
“I think Teck has done all the work they need to do to have the environment protected and everything like that.”
The group is one of several Indigenous communities who consulted with Teck Resources.
Donald says he’s worried what would happen if Frontier gets rejected.
“If they don’t move forward… then it’s going to be bad for Alberta.”
Frontier would create about 7,000 jobs during construction and another 2,500 through operations while producing around 260,000 barrels of oil per day.
The federal government is currently reviewing the project before making a decision on whether to approve it.
It was recommended to be approved by a joint review panel last year.
