The Alberta Court of Appeal is giving the provincial government time to review Prosper Petroleum’s Rigel project.
The GoA was granted a stay of order on Wednesday after Alberta’s Court of Queen Bench gave them 10-days to make a decision.
The province and Fort McKay First Nation are currently working on a three-month roadmap to better protect the Moose Lake Area, where the project would be located.
In a statement, FMFN Chief Mel Grandjamb says this will give them time to finish their Moose Lake Plan.
“The current configuration of Prosper’s project would have significant adverse effects on the Moose Lake area.”
“We are working together with industry participation to develop a management plan that protects the exercise of Treaty Rights, preserves ecosystem integrity, and permits carefully managed responsible resource development.”
Grandjamb says the Plan will give companies, like Prosper, more clarity about future development in the area.
He adds, in their short time working together, the First Nation and province have already accomplished a lot.
“After 20 years in which previous governments fell short, we now have the finish line in sight.”
