Leadership in Fort Chipewyan is asking that non-essential visitors avoid traveling to the community due to concerns over COVID-19.
The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Mikisew Cree First Nation, and the Fort Chipewyan Métis Local 125 are looking to close off the community to help limit the potential impact on their residents.
“We know that COVID-19 presents a serious risk to Elders and those with pre-existing health conditions,” said Allan Adam, ACFN Chief.
“We also know that the best way to reduce transmission of the virus is to limit contact between those who may be infected and those who are healthy.”
Adam notes Fort Chipewyan has no cases and they want to keep it that way for as long as possible.
He adds they understand this will have an impact on people looking to come to the hamlet, but they’re thinking of their residents first.
“We are asking anyone who is planning travel to the community for non-essential reasons – visiting, tourism, meetings – to reconsider their travel plans and instead consider the health and safety of our community.”
According to the 2018 municipal census, nearly 1,000 people live in Fort Chipewyan.
