The Fort McKay First Nation and Métis Nation are closing off their community for the foreseeable future.

The two groups announced on Friday the hamlet will be self-isolating as the virus has potentially made its way to the RMWB.

“It’s very important we do this as the virus is now close to home and we have to ensure the community is protected,” said Mel Grandjamb, Chief of the Fort McKay First Nation.

Only essential visitors will be allowed into the community. This includes people who are trucking in supplies to the hamlet.

Check stops will be set up to monitor everyone planning to visit Fort McKay.

“We still have access to emergency services, we have our fire team here prepped and ready… the RCMP will be in and out of the community,” added Ron Quintal, President of the Fort McKay Métis Nation.

Municipal and industry partners will be allowed into the hamlet if there is an emergency situation.

Meanwhile, Indigenous groups in Fort Chipewyan also announced on Thursday they’re asking the public to avoid visiting the area. The Chipewyan Prairie First Nation in Janvier has also set up their own check stops.
