The number of COVID-19 cases linked to the Imperial Oil’s Kearl Lake site is jumping to 32.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, announced on Wednesday nine new cases coming from the oilsands outbreak.
She says 10 are in quarantine on-site, while 15 others are off-site but still in Alberta.
Five are in British Columbia, one in Saskatchewan, and one in Nova Scotia.
Those who are self-isolating off-site were tested after they had left the site.
Imperial is now testing employees on-site, which started on Monday, with help from Alberta Health Services.
Workers will get tested with or without symptoms, however, it’s entirely voluntary.
The company is recommending to all that they get the test as the virus can be asymptomatic at times.
New Cases Across Alberta
There are 306 new cases across the province – putting the total to 3,401.
This is the biggest single-day increase Alberta’s seen, however, testing continues to rise.
None of the new cases are in Wood Buffalo.
This keeps the total at seven active in Fort McMurray.
Four others in the community and two in the rural area have already recovered from the virus.
Across the province, 1,310 individuals no longer have the virus.
Meanwhile, the GoA says five more individuals have passed away – raising the death toll at 66.
Tests are also being done on two others who recently died to determine if they had COVID-19.
As of right now, 70 people are currently being treated at the hospital, 18 of which are in the ICU.
