RMWB Closing Off Lower Townsite and Waterways, Issuing More Mandatory Evacuations

The municipality is closing off the Lower Townsite and Waterways due to extreme flooding.

The ice on the Athabasca River broke Sunday morning and is causing major flooding, forcing the municipality to declare a state of local emergency.

Entry to these areas is restricted and those who leave won’t be allowed back in.

The municipality is telling residents in flood-prone areas to prepare a 72-hour emergency kit and stay alert.

Mandatory Evacuation Orders

The RMWB has now issued several more evacuation orders.

  • Demers Drive
  • Armit Crescent
  • Fitzsimmons Avenue
  • Father Mercredi Street
  • The Platinum Hotel at 8530 Franklin Avenue
  • Pond Crescent
  • Poplar Crescent
  • Southern portion of Alberta Drive closest to Hospital Street
  • From Riedel Street to Marshall Street along Manning Avenue

Waterways, Ptarmigan Court Trailer Park, Draper, Taiga Nova Eco-Industrial Park, and Longboat Landing in the Lower Townsite were put under evacuation orders on Sunday.

A Registration Centre has been set up at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre for evacuees to check-in and get information on supports and accommodations available.

More information can be found on the RMWB’s website.
