You’re running out of time to register for Disaster Relief Funding.
The province is collecting applications for just one more month for those with uninsurable damage from April’s flood.
They are providing $100 million for those who were impacted in downtown, Waterways, Draper, Ptarmigan Court, and Taiga Nova Eco-Industrial Park.
Speaking on Fort McMurray Matters, Mayor Don Scott says many aren’t taking advantage of this program.
“By our calculations, very few people have registered for that program who would otherwise be entitled to qualify for it, so that’s a very big concern that I have.”
While the exact amount of uninsurable damage is currently not known, the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates there was at least $228 million in damages to insurable property.
Scott believes many are still waiting to see if they’ll be covered.
“Just assuming insurance is going to come in and write you a check, please do not – register for the DRP funding.”
This is the second time in four years the province has offered DRP funding. Back in 2016, the NDP government provided a similar program for those impacted by the Horse River wildfire.
“Those days cannot last forever and I have a sense that other levels of government are just not going to keep on doing this,” added Scott.
Residents can apply for DRP funding by visiting the GoA’s website. The deadline to register is August 7.
