Fort McMurray’s active total of COVID-19 cases is seeing a big jump over the long weekend.
The province announced on Monday 3,987 new cases across the province over the past four days.
There are currently 10,582 active cases across Alberta, while there have been a total of 153,194 positive tests. There are also 312 Albertans in the hospital for the virus, 76 of which are in ICUs.
Locally, Fort McMurray added 165 new cases and 15 recoveries which raises the active total to 314.
The rural areas added three new cases in the past 96 hours, raising the total of active cases to five.
Wood Buffalo National Park added remains at one active case.
In total, 1,949 individuals across the RMWB – 1,800 in Fort McMurray, 139 in the rural areas, and 10 in Wood Buffalo National Park – have recovered.
They are among the 140,614 who’ve recovered across the province. This represents over 91 per cent of reported cases.
There were also four new deaths from COVID-19 in Alberta over the past 96 hours – raising the total to 1,998.
To date, three individuals in Fort McMurray have died as a result of the virus.
School Update
Multiple cases are being linked to individuals with ties to schools in Fort McMurray.
Single cases at Holy Trinity, Elsie Yanik, the Islamic School, Composite, and St. Anne are turning out to be variants of concerns.
An outbreak has also been declared at École Dickinsfield as there have been seven cases tied to members of the school. Five of these cases are variants of concern.
Individuals with ties to the Christian School, Sister Mary Phillips, Father Beauregard, and Father Turcotte have also tested positive for the virus.
The schools, along with Alberta Health Services, will be in contact with all those who need to self-isolate.
