The Fort McMurray Public School District is moving students at two schools back to virtual learning once spring break ends.
From April 12 to 16, those in kindergarten to grade 9 at the Fort McMurray Islamic School and those in the early childhood development program to grade 3 at École Dickinsfield will continue their education at home.
Both schools are dealing with a high number of COVID-19 cases which has resulted in several staff members and classrooms needing to self-isolate.
École Dickinsfield is currently dealing with an outbreak as 10 individuals with ties to the school have tested positive. Seven of these cases have been confirmed as the U.K. variant.
The Islamic School has multiple cases linked to individuals, four of which are confirmed to be the U.K. variant.
Combined, 25 staff members and 226 students are currently in isolation.
“As these grades move to online learning, the school and Division staff will be able to work out technology-related logistics as needed for students,” said Jennifer Turner, FMPSD Superintendent.
“We are able to accommodate any students who cannot find childcare options. Staff not in isolation are able to remain in the building to access teaching materials.”
The FMPSD says students in grades 4 to 6 at École Dickinsfield are still scheduled to return to school on April 12.
