Wood Buffalo council is advocating to have a 15 per cent cap put on all fees for all third-party delivery apps.
They met virtually on Tuesday where they unanimously approved a motion from Councillor Verna Murphy to send a letter to Premier Jason Kenney and Doug Schweitzer, Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Innovation, in support of the move.
Murphy says she’s spoken to multiple restaurants that claim they’re losing hundreds of dollars a week due to these fees.
“That’s money that’s leaving our region every month, every week and leaving the pockets of small business, restaurant owners during the pandemic.”
According to Murphy, she’s been told this cap could save some restaurants between $1,500 – $1,700 a week.
Those being hit the hardest is allegedly the small businesses.
“They really feel that they don’t sign up for the bigger apps that they don’t get the business at all,” added Murphy.
If brought in, Alberta would join Ontario, British Colombia, and Saskatchewan who’ve already brought in their own caps.
Mayor Don Scott also chimed in, stating it’s something the province should do.
“It’s completely, in my view, unfair to the restaurant industry.”
Mix News has reached out to Skip The Dishes but have yet to hear back at this time.
However, according to Global News, the company brought in an additional fee to offset the cap introduced by the B.C. government.
