The Government of Canada is investing 4.2 million dollars to prevent gang violence and gun crime in Edmonton.
The funding will support youth at risk or currently involved in gangs, as well as determine the causes of crime.
“Crime prevention and intervention initiatives are critical to creating pathways away from violence for young Edmontonians,” said City of Edmonton’s Mayor, Amarjeet Sohi.
“I am glad to see the federal government provide needed funding to build on the good work already being done in our community and complement the City of Edmonton’s Community Safety and Well-Being Strategy. This funding will make a meaningful impact on community safety and the lives of youth across our city.”
The investment was announced on Dec. 1, 2023, a day before the lockdown at West Edmonton Mall.
On Dec. 2, a lockdown was announced and police were called following reports of a man with a gun inside the mall.
No shots were fired and charges are still pending against the suspect.
The Canadian Government says investing in crime prevention is part of the plan to keep Canadians safe.
