Extreme cold warnings remain in the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region, as well as the rest of Alberta, but not for long.
According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Alysa Pederson, the worst is over with this cold snap.
“We did see temperatures into those -40’s with wind-chills into the -50’s over the weekend,” Pederson said. “We’re still in an extreme cold warning, we’re still expecting wind-chills — especially over night — to be approaching -40 or -50.”
Pederson says there is some snow on the way.
“It’s not too much, maybe at most two centimeters through to Tuesday night with some ruminant cloud and some flurry activity, nothing significant.”
Pederson says while Fort McMurray did not break a record during the weekend, a new mark was set in the area.
“On Friday, Fort Chipewyan did break a record,” Pederson said.
Their record low is now -45.9, and the old record was from 1994 of -43.5.”
Records were broken in a number of Alberta centres, including Edmonton, Camrose, and Banff.
