Alberta Wildfire issues Fire Restriction

The province has issued a fire restriction for the Fort McMurray Forest Area south of Lake Athabasca. Wood campfires are now prohibited on public lands in this area, though they remain permitted in designated campgrounds. The use of fireworks and exploding targets is also banned. Areas north of Lake Athabasca are under a fire advisory, meaning no new fire permits will be issued until conditions improve.

Smoke will continue to linger over Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo for the next few days. However, Alberta Wildfire reports that the smoke has helped to subdue fire behavior. Of the 21 fires in the region, only one is classified as out of control.
