Daytime load limits reduced on Fort Chipewyan Winter Road
FORT CHIPEWYAN, Alta. — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is reducing the daytime load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road due to warm weather beginning 10:00 a.m. March 4, 2025.
Vehicles over 5,000 kg are prohibited from using the route during the daytime period of 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to prevent damage. Heavier vehicles up to 45,000 kg can still travel overnight between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. when temperatures are lower.
Drivers caught violating the load restrictions face steep fines. In early February, RMWB bylaw services fined a driver $6,000 for allegedly exceeding the weight limit. Officials warn that damage to the road can create safety hazards and delay the return of higher load capacities.
Motorists are encouraged to check the RMWB website or call Pulse for up-to-date road conditions.
