Friday marks International Women’s Day.
This year, the federal government’s theme is ‘Invest in Women: Celebrate Progress.’
PLAY 103.7 has featured prominent women in the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region all week during Fort McMurray Matters. On Friday, Her Honour Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani joined the show to share her thoughts on International Women’s Day.

She says in her role, there’s no such thing as a typical day.
“For instance, Wednesday, I met with some young students at my office at the Legislature; they came here to learn about our system of government,” Lakhani said. “After that, I had a few meetings, and in the evening, I attended a business leaders award celebration.”
Her Honour says her favourite part of her role is meeting people in Alberta.
“The gift of this job is that you get to meet people from all different walks of life from many different parts of the world, people who come and make Canada their home,” Lakhani said. “That is what I love the most.”
She says looking forward, Alberta and the country as a whole must do a better job of getting women to the table where important decisions are made.
“I think women need to believe in themselves and need to show that they are capable of sitting around the table and become decision-makers and policymakers,” Lakhani said. “I have to say we are well on our way to doing that.”
The full interview will air on PLAY 103.7 after the 12:00 PM news.
Harvard Media News reached out to both the Alberta Government and Alberta NDP. Both declined to participate in our International Women’s Day coverage.
