RCMP urge caution as motorcycle season revs up in Fort McMurrayFort McMurray, Alta. — With spring weather returning and motorcycles already back on the roads in Fort McMurray, Wood Buffalo RCMP are urging both drivers and riders to share the road safely.
Police say this time of year brings an uptick in motorcycle traffic, and with motorbikes being smaller and less visible than other vehicles, it’s crucial that all road users stay alert.
“Motorcycles are harder to spot, especially in blind spots and at intersections,” said Staff Sgt. Sabrina Clayton with the Wood Buffalo RCMP. “Drivers should always check twice before turning or changing lanes and give motorcyclists extra space.”
Clayton added that defensive driving and predictability are key to avoiding collisions, especially during the early spring when road conditions can still be challenging.
Police are reminding drivers to:
- Check blind spots before merging or changing lanes.
- Look twice at intersections, especially when turning left.
- Leave ample following distance, as motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars.
- Signal intentions clearly and avoid sudden lane changes.
- Watch for hazards like potholes or loose gravel, which pose more danger to two-wheeled vehicles.
For motorcyclists preparing to hit the road, the RCMP recommend a pre-season checkup of their bike, wearing proper protective gear, and staying alert to changing road conditions.
“Gravel, sand, and debris left over from winter can create dangerous riding surfaces,” said Clayton. “And always avoid lingering in drivers’ blind spots. Visibility is your best defense.”
The RCMP encourage everyone to stay alert and courteous on the road as traffic volumes pick up with the warmer weather. For more safety tips, follow @RCMPinAlberta on Facebook and @RCMPAlberta on X.
