Street Sweepers Take Over as RMWB Wraps Up Winter Maintenance Season
Fort McMurray, AB— Say goodbye to snowplows and hello to street sweepers. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is officially calling an end to its annual Winter Maintenance Zone (WMZ) season, after clearing over 404,695 cubic metres of snow from local streets.
That’s enough snow to fill more than 160 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The snow was all hauled to the Tower Road Snow Disposal Site where it will melt into runoff over the springtime. The work has helped keep roads safe and clear throughout another northern Alberta winter.
“Thank you to the winter maintenance crews for your dedication and hard work throughout the season,” the Municipality said in a release. “And many thanks as well to residents for staying on top of WMZ alerts and parking restrictions. Your cooperation plays a key role in keeping operations running smoothly.”
With winter in the rear-view mirror, the RMWB is now pivoting to spring cleanup. Street sweeping has officially begun, and crews will be out clearing gravel and dust from roads while also monitoring for localized flooding and ensuring storm drains remain clear.
The Municipality says the transition from snow removal to sweeping is a key step in getting Fort McMurray streets ready for the warmer months ahead.
