Record turnout reported at advance polls ahead of federal election
Elections Canada says a record-breaking 7.3 million Canadians have cast ballots during advance polls over the Easter weekend, shattering the previous high of 5.8 million set in 2021.
Officials say early voting began with a start, with more than two million people turning out on the first day alone. The agency attributes the spike to growing interest in the ongoing federal election and improvements in access to early voting.
If the trend continues, experts believe the country could see overall voter turnout exceed the 62.2 per cent recorded in the last federal election, held during the pandemic. Some pundits even suggest turnout could challenge the all-time high of 79 per cent, set in 1962.
Election day is Monday, April 28.
