Man seriously injured in Fort McMurray assault, suspect arrested
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — A Fort McMurray man remains in hospital after a violent assault downtown on Sunday afternoon.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say emergency services were called around 1:30 p.m. to the area near the Salvation Army on MacDonald Avenue. They found a 65-year-old man bleeding heavily from a large neck wound. Paramedics treated him at the scene and transported him to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, where he remains in serious condition.
Police believe the altercation began outside Rivers Casino on Hardin Street. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the casino and identified a suspect. A 34-year-old man, believed to be known to the victim, was located nearby and arrested without incident.
Lloyd Janvier, of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, has been charged with aggravated assault, breach of probation and failure to comply with a release order. RCMP say Janvier was already bound by probation and a release order at the time of the assault.
He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on April 30.
Wood Buffalo RCMP continue to investigate with assistance from the General Investigation Section.
