Evacuation ordered as wildfire closes in on Boyle, Alta.
BOYLE, Alta. — A fast-moving wildfire has forced the evacuation of Boyle, a northern Alberta community of about 850 people.
The evacuation order was issued shortly before 11 p.m. Monday as the wildfire advanced to within one kilometre of the town’s southern edge and continued to move north.
Residents of the Village of Boyle, along with those living east of Range Roads 195 to 193 and south of Township Road 650, were told to leave immediately.
Evacuees are being directed north along Highways 63 and 55 to Lac La Biche, where a reception centre has been set up at Parkland Motels II at 10710 101 Avenue. Buses are available at the Boyle Hockey Rink for those who need transportation. Anyone requiring assistance to reach the buses is asked to contact the Village of Boyle office at 780-689-3643.
The local Co-op gas station remains open for emergency fuel. Authorities are asking evacuees to bring their pets and prepare to be away from home for at least 72 hours.
Highway 831 between Boyle and the junction with Highway 661 is closed. Highway 63 is open, but officials are urging travellers to check 511.alberta.ca for updates as conditions can change quickly.
