Weekly yard waste collection resumes May 13 in Fort McMurray
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Residents in Fort McMurray can begin setting out their yard waste next week as the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo resumes weekly curbside collection on Tuesday, May 13.
The municipality is reminding residents to place yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, small twigs, weeds and other garden materials in large brown paper bags. These bags must be set out by 7:30 a.m. on regular garbage collection days, with at least one foot of space between them and other bins.
Brown paper bags are available at most grocery and hardware stores. Materials not accepted include kitchen scraps, pet waste, dirt, rocks, plastic, compostable bags and any commercial yard waste. The municipality emphasizes that bags should not contain any non-organic garden waste such as broken pots, plastic sheeting or metal stakes.
All yard waste collected is taken to a compost facility. Residents can also drop off yard waste free of charge at the municipal landfill year-round, seven days a week from 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Each bag dropped off at the landfill must weigh less than 50 pounds and be in a brown paper bag to qualify for free disposal.
Weekly yard waste collection runs throughout the growing season. Residents can visit rmwb.ca/yardwaste or contact Pulse at 780-743-7000 for more information or to access the municipality’s online calendar, reminder tools and waste sorting guides.
