In a historic first, Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, Prevost becomes the first American to lead the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. After just 24 hours of voting, the 69-year-old cardinal was chosen to be the new pontiff, following debates over the church’s direction. In his first words from St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo emphasized peace and unity. His election has sparked celebrations from Vatican City to Chicago and Peru, where he served for over two decades.
