Sunshine Oilsands has been ordered to shut down and abandon all operations in northern Alberta. The Alberta Energy Regulator says the company repeatedly violated safety rules, with cracked pipelines, leaking tanks, and fire risks at its West Ells site located North of Fort McMurray. Sunshine failed to secure funding for repairs, and in February, oversight was handed to the Orphan Well Association. A request to regain control this spring was denied.
