Fort McMurray firefighters responded to an illegal fire in Abasand on Sunday night. Just after 10 p.m., a pumper team arrived at the site of a former oil sands plant and found a large garbage fire inside the concrete remains of an old mine building. Thankfully, firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly. Regional Emergency Services is reminding everyone that illegal fires in wooded areas and trails can easily spark destructive wildfires. Remember, open-air campfires are strictly prohibited within Fort McMurray city limits. Starting an illegal fire on municipal land can result in a $1,200 fine under the Outdoor Fire Bylaw. Municipal littering fines can also exceed $1,000. And under provincial law, anyone caught dumping garbage on public lands may be ordered to clean up the site and face additional fines.
