RCMP in Wood Buffalo begin using body cameras
FORT McMURRAY, AB. — RCMP officers in Wood Buffalo are now wearing body-worn cameras as part of their standard equipment. The move, which took effect May 26, is part of a national rollout first announced in November 2024. The move aims to strengthen transparency, improve police interactions with the public, and support investigations.
Chief Superintendent Mark Hancock, Officer in Charge of Wood Buffalo RCMP, says the cameras complement the in-car video systems already in use.
“Body-worn cameras are something that the RCMP in Wood Buffalo welcomes. They are not only a strong tool for gathering evidence in investigations but will be accountable to record events in order to maintain transparency for both the police and the public,” Hancock said. “I always tell our detachment members to work as if they are being recorded and to do the right thing at all times.”
Officers have received specific training on using the cameras, with a focus on privacy, including guidance on where and when recording may not be appropriate unless there is an emergency. Police are expected to inform members of the public when they are being recorded, whenever possible. In cases where there are safety concerns or where the footage may be important for investigations, RCMP policy requires officers to keep the cameras on.
The RCMP are also seeking feedback from the community on the use of body cameras. A survey is available online in English, French and Inuktitut.
