Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the RMWB. The watch extends from Fort Smith to the southern portions of the RMWB. According to Environment Canada:
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail. Thunderstorms that developed this afternoon will continue through the evening. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. When thunder roars, go indoors!
Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Secure loose objects. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.”
There is also a severe heat warning in effect for our region, and Environment Canada is cautioning the public to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, drink plenty of water, and take frequent breaks from the heat.
Weather alerts and warnings can be found on Environment Canada’s official alert website.
