FORT McMURRAY, AB. — Fire risk expected to rise across RMWB as crews make gains elsewhere
Alberta Wildfire crews have made progress in the past 24 hours, extinguishing three forest fires and bringing the provincial total down to 57. About half of the active fires are considered under control.
No new fires have been reported in the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region, but the wildfire danger remains high. It is listed as very high from Fort McMurray northward and extreme in the southern parts of the region. The province expects the risk to increase heading into the weekend.
There is only a slim chance of rain in the next 24 hours, and officials are urging residents to exercise caution when working or spending time outdoors. A fire ban remains in place across the RMWB.
Crews continue work on the Caribou Lake wildfire near Conklin using heavy equipment, helicopters and ground personnel to hold the fire on its north and south sides.
