Hydro-dam 1000 Athabasca
ATHABASCA, Alta. — The Town of Athabasca unveiled a powerful new wildfire-fighting tool on Friday during its first-ever Wildfire Awareness Day. The event drew more than 100 guests for the live demonstration of the new HydroDome1000 water cannon. Officials say the high-powered system, developed by FFF Equipment, could become a critical asset as Alberta faces increasingly destructive fire seasons.
The event at Riverfront Park featured the HydroDome1000 blasting a controlled torrent of water across a wide area, demonstrating its capacity for high-volume delivery in remote and rugged terrain. “We’ve seen what wildfires can do to our communities,” said Fire Chief Jason Sturock. “This kind of technology can give us a fighting chance.” Mayor Robert Balay and Athabasca MLA Glenn van Dijken also addressed the crowd, which included firefighters, local leaders, regulators and industry partners.
The cannon is engineered for rapid deployment and precision targeting, helping first responders suppress fires more effectively. It is being touted as a way to bolster frontline firefighting efforts in regions where communities are surrounded by dense boreal forest and increasingly vulnerable to wildfires. “We are looking for practical tools that protect people and property, and this is a promising one,” said Balay.
Organizers say the event was not just about technology, but about building public awareness of fire risk. Alberta has seen a surge in wildfire activity in recent years, driven by longer dry seasons and higher winds. Athabasca hopes the showcase will inspire investment and preparedness in other municipalities across the province.
The HydroDome1000 is a product of FFF Equipment, a joint venture between Primus Line Canada and Gemeinworks. The company says its system blends high-performance pump components with proven pipeline infrastructure, offering communities a new line of defense as fire threats continue to grow.
