Extreme fire danger returns to Fort McMurray Forest Area as weekend approaches
FORT McMURRAY, AB. — Alberta Wildfire is warning that extreme fire danger has returned to the Fort McMurray Forest Area heading into the weekend, with hot, dry conditions continuing to raise concerns in the region.
The fire risk remains moderate in the southern portion of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which is covered by the Lac La Biche Forest Area. North of Lake Athabasca, conditions are at their driest, and a fire ban remains in effect for the forest protection area there. Those planning to travel or enjoy the outdoors this weekend are being urged to take extra precautions.
While weather conditions remain challenging, firefighting crews across the province are making steady progress. Of the 55 wildfires currently active in Alberta, more than half have been brought under control. Eight are being held, and 19 are still classified as out of control.
One of the largest wildfires in the region, located near Janvier, remains out of control at just over 68,000 hectares. Although it has shown no growth this week, crews say it will take considerable effort to contain and eventually downgrade the blaze. Another significant fire in the Birch Mountains is burning at approximately 21,000 hectares. That fire is located far from any communities.
Officials continue to emphasize the importance of fire safety, especially as over 60 per cent of wildfires in Alberta are believed to be human-caused. Even in areas without active fire bans, the risk of ignition remains high.
Residents and visitors are asked to monitor fire bans and advisories at albertafirebans.ca and report any signs of wildfire activity to 310-FIRE.
