Commuters advised to plan alternate routes during utilities upgrade
FORT McMURRAY, AB — Drivers in Fort McMurray’s Thickwood neighbourhood will face significant traffic disruptions next week as the municipality closes a major section of Thickwood Boulevard for underground infrastructure work.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says Thickwood Boulevard will be fully closed in both directions between Silin Forest Road and Signal Road from the evening of Friday, June 27, until the evening of Tuesday, July 1. The full closure is needed to replace a water main beneath the roadway as part of the Silin Forest Road Deep Utilities Upgrades.
The municipality confirmed the work will be done around the clock during the closure. Detours will be in place in both directions to help redirect traffic around the construction zone.
In addition to the full road closure, a single lane on the north side of Thickwood Boulevard will remain closed until July 9. That lane closure began as early as June 16 to allow crews to prepare for the main portion of the project.
Municipal updates posted to social media urge drivers to plan alternate routes, expect delays and follow all posted signs for safety.
