Small acts make a big difference for Wood Buffalo Food Bank
FORT McMURRAY, AB – The Wood Buffalo Food Bank is encouraging residents to take small, simple steps to help keep shelves stocked through the summer. With supplies expected to dip before the fall food drive, Executive Director Tiffany Stagg says even the smallest contributions can go a long way.
“Some of our most impactful contributions come from smaller efforts,” said Stagg. “A classroom recently raised $200 and donated food and books for kids, and a third-party drive organized by E Construction this spring actually surpassed our own. It really shows how every effort counts.”
While major food drives are vital, Stagg says people often overlook the everyday things they can do to support neighbours in need. Signing up as a monthly donor for as little as $5 can provide breakfast for a student. Picking up one extra non-perishable item during a grocery run and dropping it in a donation bin can make a real impact.
The Food Bank also welcomes creative community initiatives, such as themed mini food drives in classrooms or offices, birthday fundraisers, or simply resharing their social media posts to help raise awareness. These small-scale efforts are especially valuable during summer months, when donation levels typically decline.
“We typically hope to be stocked until our fall food drive, but this year we anticipate running low well before October,” Stagg said. “This kind of campaign could come at a perfect time.”
