Official results confirm Nenshi wins Edmonton-Strathcona seat in Alberta by-elections
EDMONTON — Elections Alberta has confirmed the official results of three provincial by-elections held June 23, naming winners in the ridings of Edmonton-Ellerslie, Edmonton-Strathcona and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills.
Naheed Nenshi, former Calgary mayor and now leader of the Alberta NDP, officially won the seat in Edmonton-Strathcona. His victory marks a significant moment for the party, as Nenshi now becomes a sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly and can fully take on the role of Leader of the Official Opposition. This means he will now be able to participate in question period, contribute to legislative debates, sit on committees, and more actively hold the government to account from within the chamber. His entry into the legislature brings the NDP leadership directly into the daily business of the Assembly for the first time since he became leader.
Joining Nenshi in the legislature is fellow Alberta NDP candidate Gurtej Brar, who won in Edmonton-Ellerslie. Meanwhile, the United Conservative Party held onto its stronghold in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, where Tara Sawyer secured the seat.
Voter turnout in the by-elections was mixed, with Edmonton-Ellerslie at 24.5 per cent, Edmonton-Strathcona at 32.0 per cent, and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills seeing the highest participation at 38.8 per cent.
