Bylaw Services step up enforcement with new aerial technology
Fort McMurray, AB– Bylaw Services in Fort McMurray are now using drones to detect, track, and pursue individuals driving off-highway vehicles (OHVs) illegally. The technology is already proving effective, helping officers pursue violators more safely and efficiently within the Urban Service Area, and lay charges against their operators
On July 2, Peace Officers used a drone to intercept a dirt bike rider in a restricted green space behind Harpe Way, Morgan Heights, and Walnut Crescent. The rider was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for failing to stop for a Peace Officer and for not having valid insurance.
This incident is part of a broader drone enforcement approach being implemented by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) to reduce unlawful OHV use and improve safety. Bylaw Services say the use of drones has improved their ability to locate riders breaking the law and take appropriate enforcement action.
Illegal OHV activity, especially in urban green spaces, remains a serious concern. Officials with the RMWB note that such behaviour reflects poorly on the wider OHV community and undermines efforts to promote responsible riding. The Municipality encourages residents to report illegal or dangerous OHV use by calling 310-RCMP or Pulse at 780-743-7000. Reports should include a location or identifying details and are kept on file for investigation.
OHVs, which include dirt bikes, quads, and side-by-sides, are banned in all parts of the Fort McMurray Urban Service Area, except designated municipal roads in Abasand. Riders must follow safety laws at all times. These include having valid insurance and registration with a visible licence plate, working headlights and taillights, a compliant muffler and spark arrestor, and a CSA-approved helmet. Impaired riding is prohibited, and users are urged to check for fire bans or trail restrictions before heading out.
The Municipality states that it will continue using drones to support enforcement efforts and to educate the public on legal and safe OHV operation. More information is available at rmwb.ca/OHV.
