Fort McMurray Fire Department seeks paramedics for unique firefighter training program
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — July 14, 2025 — Paramedics looking to expand their careers can now join the Fort McMurray Fire Department’s Paramedic-Fire Cadet program, which offers paid firefighter training and full certification. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is recruiting Primary or Advanced Care Paramedics to take part in this integrated fire and emergency medical services team.
The program provides successful applicants with full NFPA 1001 Level I and II firefighter certification while working on the job. Acting Regional Fire Chief Rob Van Hecke says the department wants paramedics who are ready to grow their skills and broaden their impact. “This is a remarkable department, in an amazing community — a place where you’ll receive the training and support you need to learn and advance your career,” he said.
Candidates without prior fire training are eligible to apply for this paid opportunity to become certified firefighters. The integrated model allows recruits to serve both as firefighters and paramedics, gaining diverse experience responding to medical emergencies, structure fires, back-country rescues, hazardous materials incidents and highway accidents.
The department offers competitive pay, benefits, and a pension plan above the average. It also promotes a strong work-life balance and wellness programs. Firefighters work with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and provide regional service including ground and air medevac support.
Paramedics interested in this career-changing opportunity are encouraged to apply online soon. Those currently completing their paramedic qualifications may also be eligible to apply. The intake is limited and positions will be filled based on qualifications and suitability for the integrated emergency response role.
This initiative reflects Fort McMurray Fire Department’s commitment to modern, fully integrated emergency services combining fire and advanced life support capabilities to better serve the community.
