Alberta nurses to be transferred to new health agencies as part of AHS overhaul
EDMONTON — Nearly 5,000 registered nurses in Alberta will have their employment transferred from Alberta Health Services to two new provincial health agencies on September 1.
The United Nurses of Alberta says formal transfer notices will be issued next week as roles move to Acute Care Alberta and Assisted Living Alberta. These agencies are part of the province’s ongoing plan to restructure the health system by splitting Alberta Health Services into four separate organizations.
The union says daily responsibilities and existing contracts will remain in place for now, and systems like Connect Care will continue to operate as usual. However, the union is raising concerns about possible disruptions to patient care and confusion over employer responsibilities within the new structure.
The province has not yet provided detailed explanations of how the changes will affect frontline staff. The union says it will continue to seek clarity on what the restructuring means for its members.
