RMWB crews to inspect and clean pipes in downtown, Waterways, Abasand, and other areas through September
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Residents in several Fort McMurray neighbourhoods can expect to see sewer cleaning crews at work starting July 23 as part of a multi-year effort to keep the municipality’s underground infrastructure running smoothly.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says the first phase of the project will focus on downtown Fort McMurray, Waterways, Grayling Terrace, Abasand, and TaigaNova. Crews will be cleaning and inspecting sewer lines through to the end of September to prevent blockages and monitor the condition of aging pipes.
The work is being completed by Uni-jet Industrial Pipe Ltd., which will provide notice in advance before starting in each neighbourhood. The cleaning is part of the municipality’s long-term asset management strategy, aimed at maintaining pipe health and identifying areas that may need repair or replacement.
During cleaning, air pressure changes in the system can cause water to splash back from toilets, sinks, or floor drains. To reduce the risk of mess or damage, residents in affected areas are advised to keep toilet lids closed, use drain plugs in sinks and bathtubs, and cover basement floor drains with thick plastic secured by a heavy object. The municipality also recommends removing bathroom mats and placing old towels around the base of toilets as a precaution.
“This project is part of our asset management strategy for the region,” said Erin Judge, manager for the Project Management Office at the RMWB. “Not only will cleaning and inspection ensure our sewer systems are working to their full potential, but it also lets us know if there are areas in our underground infrastructure that require scheduled maintenance or replacement.”
