Four fires in Fort McMurray Forest Area are under control but conditions could worsen with continued heat
FORT McMURRAY, AB. — The fire danger across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is climbing as a heat warning continues for the Fort McMurray region. Officials say the risk remains extreme in the Fort Smith area and very high in the rest of the Fort McMurray Forest Area, with hot, dry air expected to push conditions even higher through the remainder of the week.
A fire advisory remains in effect for the Fort McMurray Forest Area. Alberta Wildfire reports there are currently four active wildfires in the region, all of which are classified as under control. Residents are being urged to take extra caution outdoors and avoid any activity that could start a fire.
In the southern sections of the municipality, which fall under the Lac La Biche Forest Area, the wildfire danger is classified as high. Several large wildfires are burning out of control, and a fire advisory is also in place for that area.
Officials say conditions are favourable for new wildfires to ignite easily and spread quickly, making them harder to control. Sprinklers have been installed on buildings in some areas as a precaution while crews work to strengthen containment lines.
Residents are encouraged to check AlbertaFireBans.ca frequently for the latest information on fire advisories, restrictions and potential burn bans. They are also reminded to ensure campfires are fully extinguished and to report wildfires by calling 310-FIRE.
