Police say risky driving choices increase danger for everyone
FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — Wood Buffalo RCMP are asking motorists to slow down and avoid aggressive driving this August, warning that risky road behaviours significantly raise the chance of crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Police say aggressive driving is not about honest mistakes or difficult weather conditions, but about choices drivers make in response to others. These behaviours include excessive speeding, tailgating, weaving through traffic, running red lights, failing to yield, and hostile gestures toward other road users.
RCMP describe these actions as intentional and unsafe, with no justification rooted in road or environmental factors.
Officers are urging the public to plan ahead, remain patient, and avoid driving when stressed or agitated. Police say pulling over to calm down or finding another way to travel can help prevent dangerous encounters.
The campaign is part of the RCMP’s ongoing effort to reduce road rage and promote safer streets across the region. Drivers are encouraged to follow traffic updates and safety tips through the RCMP’s social media channels.
