Measles cases decline slightly, but Alberta’s north zone remains hotspot
FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — Alberta’s measles outbreak has slowed slightly, with the total number of cases dropping just below 1,700, but northern Alberta continues to see the highest number of new infections.
The province reported 35 new cases this week, with 18 of those in the north zone, which includes Fort McMurray. While about one-third of all active cases are in the north, just over half of the new infections this week occurred in that region.
Despite the continued spread in northern Alberta, no new exposure sites have been reported in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
To help manage the outbreak, Alberta Health Services has launched a dedicated measles hotline. Residents can call 1-844-944-3434 to check their vaccination status, report symptoms, or book an appointment for immunization.
AHS also maintains an online list of public exposure sites at https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/msl/page19108.aspx. People who visited any listed locations during the specified dates and are not protected against measles may be at higher risk of infection.
