EDMONTON–The Alberta government is rolling out new regulations aimed at stopping aggressive and exploitative behavior by some tow truck drivers at accident scenes.
Starting Friday, tow trucks will be required to stay at least 200 metres away from crash sites unless they are specifically requested by police or the drivers involved.
Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen says the move comes after growing concerns about tow operators pressuring people into using their services and then charging excessive fees.
“In some cases, drivers weren’t given clear information about where their vehicles were being taken or how much they’d be charged,” said Dreeshen. “That’s unacceptable.”
Tow truck drivers who violate the new exclusion zone could face a fine of $1,000. The province’s new rules closely mirror a bylaw passed earlier this year by Calgary city council. Dreeshen says the goal is to ensure consistent protections for drivers across Alberta.
The changes are part of a broader effort to improve transparency and safety in the towing industry.
