FORT MCMURRAY, AB — A Fort McMurray man is facing multiple charges following a police investigation into a reported theft involving a moving company and the discovery of stolen property listed for sale online.
On July 4, 2025, Wood Buffalo RCMP received a complaint from a local resident who reported items missing after hiring a moving company in May. The victim initially contacted the company about the missing belongings but later spotted what they believed to be their stolen property listed on Facebook Marketplace. They then contacted police.
The moving company cooperated with investigators, providing information that helped advance the case.
On August 8, 2025, at approximately 8:00 a.m., RCMP executed a judicially authorized search warrant at a residence on Paulson Street. A 43-year-old man, identified as Michael Hamilton, was arrested at the scene without incident.
During the search, police seized:
- Multiple sets of collectible Pokémon cards valued at approximately $20,000
- Identity documents including birth certificates and passports
- 10 grams of suspected methamphetamine
- Additional quantities of suspected controlled substances
- Brass knuckles
Hamilton is now facing a range of charges, including:
- One count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- 19 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
- Two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance
- 13 counts of Possession of Government Documents
- One count of Possession of Weapons Contrary to Order
Hamilton was held for a Judicial Interim Release hearing and has since been released on a Release Order with conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice on September 3, 2025.
Wood Buffalo RCMP continue to investigate and remind residents to report suspicious activity and thefts promptly.
