Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating a suspected arson after a late-night fire broke out at a residence on Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.
On August 10, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m., officers on routine patrol were flagged down by community members reporting a fire. RCMP and Regional Emergency Services responded quickly and were able to contain the blaze to the kitchen and living room areas. No one was inside the home at the time.
Witnesses told police they saw a man known to them setting off fireworks inside the residence shortly before the fire started. RCMP located the suspect a short distance away and arrested him without incident.
A 51-year-old resident of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is now facing one count of arson. His name has not been released, as charges are pending the swearing of an Information. He remains in custody awaiting a judicial interim release hearing.
Wood Buffalo RCMP remain on scene as the investigation continues.
