Fort McMurray – Wood Buffalo RCMP, in partnership with Municipal Traffic Services and Alberta RCMP Provincial Traffic – Fort McMurray, conducted a targeted traffic enforcement operation on Highway 63, just south of Fort McMurray. The day-long initiative focused on speed enforcement and resulted in more than 40 violation notices and written warnings issued to drivers traveling both north and southbound.
One driver was clocked at 168 km/h in a 110 km/h zone and has been summoned to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on September 12.
While speeding is the focus of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Calendar in April, RCMP are urging drivers to slow down year-round, especially on rural roads where hazards like wildlife, blind curves, and poor surfaces are common. Speeding fines and demerits vary, and fines double in construction and emergency zones.
Mandatory Alcohol Screening was conducted during every stop, with all drivers complying. No instances of impaired driving were reported.
As summer continues, RCMP are reminding Albertans to stay safe while enjoying the outdoors:
- Never drive impaired.
- Plan for a sober ride if consuming alcohol or drugs.
- Avoid operating boats, ATVs, or other machinery while under the influence.
If you suspect impaired driving, call 911. For more traffic safety tips, follow Alberta RCMP on Facebook @RCMPinAlberta and X @RCMPAlberta.
