Fort McMurray— Wood Buffalo RCMP, in partnership with Municipal Traffic Services, conducted a targeted checkstop operation on the evening of August 15 and into the early morning hours of August 16, 2025. The operation took place at four locations across Fort McMurray and along Highway 63 Northbound, with a focus on impaired driving.
Approximately 230 vehicles were stopped during the operation. Mandatory Alcohol Screening was administered at every stop, and all drivers complied with the demand.

Results of the operation include:
- 2 Immediate Roadside Sanction Warnings — 3-day licence suspensions and 3-day vehicle seizures
- 1 Suspended Driver
- 1 Immediate Roadside Sanction for a Novice Driver — 30-day licence suspension and 7-day vehicle seizure
- 1 Immediate Roadside Sanction Fail — 90-day licence suspension, 30-day vehicle seizure, and a $1,200 fine
RCMP are reminding residents to never get behind the wheel while impaired. Whether it’s alcohol or drugs, there is no excuse for driving under the influence. If you plan to consume, arrange a sober ride to and from your destination.
Community members are encouraged to help prevent impaired driving by following safety tips year-round. If you witness or suspect an impaired driver, call 911 immediately.
