FORT MCMURRAY–Fort McMurray’s spirit of generosity was on full display this past weekend as the city’s second annual Back-to-School Drive smashed records, distributing more than 2,500 backpacks filled with school supplies to local families—more than doubling last year’s total.
Organized by a dedicated team of community leaders, including Prestige Jewellers the event transformed into a festive gathering for all ages. Families came together for a day packed with activities, including a lively BBQ, bouncy castles, and face painting, while children and parents alike enjoyed a sense of togetherness and excitement for the upcoming school year.
Community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with families expressing gratitude for both the supplies and the joyful atmosphere. Organizers say feedback has already inspired plans for next year’s event, aiming for an even larger venue and a smoother experience with registration and assigned timeslots to eliminate long waits.
In a news release organizers said “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to Elder Lorraine Albert, MP Laila Goodridge, MLA Tany Yao, Mayor Sandy Bowman, the RCMP, We Care Unit, Ainsworth Wisdom from Summit GM, and every single leader, business, organization, and volunteer who stood with us to make this year’s Back-to-School Drive possible.”
While a handful of individuals attempted to resell some of the donated supplies, organizers took the opportunity to remind the community of the event’s core message: children learn from the examples set by adults. They encourage everyone to remember the spirit of giving and support that makes Fort McMurray’s Back-to-School Drive truly special.
